Planning your trip
There are two airport options: Santa Barbara (SBA), a small airport closest to the hotels, and Los Angeles (LAX), which has more flights and better fares at the expense of a longer drive.
Important Note on Driving from LA to the Venue
If you're flying into LAX or driving up from LA, we recommend leaving the LA area by 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. SoCal traffic on a Friday can be unpredictable and heavy, but a morning start will help you beat the worst of it. This should give you a comfortable window to break up the drive with a relaxing lunch and stroll in Santa Barbara or Montecito. See our local recs page for our favorite coastal stops along the way!
Fly into Santa Barbara · SBA
- ≈ 40 minutes to Solvang, about 32 miles
- Tiny, stress-free airport with rental car counters right inside the baggage claim area
- Very few direct flights (SEA, SFO); East Coasters may need to layover in Dallas or Denver for better connection options
- 10 minutes from the heart of lively Santa Barbara! Have an adventure on the pier and grab the freshest fish for lunch, or take a 10-minute drive for a more relaxed, upscale feel in Montecito (note: stopping in Montecito adds about 20 minutes to your overall drive to the hotel).
Fly into Los Angeles · LAX
- ≈ 2.5 hours to Solvang, about 130 miles
- Most flights and cheaper fares with a huge rental selection (but we recommend reserving a car in advance!)
- Prepare yourself: While the standard drive is about 2.5 hours, Friday-afternoon traffic leaving LA and passing through Santa Barbara can easily stretch your trip to 4 hours. Gridlock hits fast if you head north past 2:00 PM — so we highly encourage landing early and hitting the road by late morning!
- Make sure to leave extra time to account for the massive, bustling airport, navigate the terminals, find your baggage claim, and take a shuttle to the LAX Rental Car Center (1.5 miles from the airport).
